Almost every expensive dental problem started as a cheap one. A crack that becomes a crown, a soft spot that becomes a root canal, gum inflammation that becomes bone loss — each of them passed through a stage where a hygienist could have caught it in a few minutes. Preventive dentistry is simply the discipline of finding problems at that stage.
At Infinite Dental Wellness in Glendale, preventive care is the foundation everything else rests on. Dr. Leon Kiraj and Dr. Liana Muradyan would rather see you twice a year for a cleaning than once for an emergency, and the visits below are how that happens.
What a preventive visit actually involves
A routine appointment is two jobs happening in one chair. The hygienist removes the plaque and hardened tartar that brushing cannot reach, particularly below the gumline and between back teeth. The dentist then examines what is left: each tooth surface, existing fillings and crowns, your bite, the soft tissues of your mouth, and — when it is time — X-rays that show what is happening between and beneath the teeth.
Most of that exam is looking for change. A spot that was stable last year and is not stable now is far more informative than any single snapshot, which is why the interval between visits matters as much as the visit itself.
How often you actually need to come in
Twice a year is the familiar answer, and for most healthy adults it is the right one. It is not a universal rule. People with a history of gum disease, a high decay rate, dry mouth from medication, diabetes, or heavy grinding often do better on a three- or four-month schedule, because their mouths change faster than a six-month interval can catch.
The honest version of this advice is that the interval should follow your risk, not the calendar. We will tell you which category you are in and why.
Protection beyond the cleaning
Two of the most useful preventive treatments have nothing to do with scaling. Sealants are a thin resin coating flowed into the deep grooves of molars, where a toothbrush bristle is physically too wide to reach the bottom; they are most valuable on children's permanent molars shortly after those teeth arrive.
Night guards and sports guards address force rather than bacteria. Clenching and grinding can flatten enamel, fracture cusps, and crack restorations, usually while you are asleep and unaware. A custom guard absorbs that load. A sports guard does the same job against impact, and a custom-fit one is worn far more consistently than a boil-and-bite version — which matters, because the guard sitting in a gym bag protects nothing.
Oral cancer screening
Every exam includes a check of the tongue, floor of the mouth, cheeks, palate, and throat tissues. It takes a couple of minutes and is easy to overlook precisely because it is quiet and routine. Oral cancers are considerably more treatable when found early, and a dental visit is the appointment where most people's mouths get looked at by a clinician at all.
If we find something worth watching, we tell you plainly what we saw, what it is likely to be, and what we want to do next — usually a short-interval recheck, sometimes a referral.
