Does a Dentist Have to Have Special Licensing for Laser Dentistry?

Laser dentistry is newer to the world of medicine, but it is proving to have many benefits to patients. As dentistry continues to improve itself, many dental practices are considering implementing laser dentistry in their offices.

In this article, we talk about laser dentistry. We also discuss whether a dentist has to have special licensing in order to practice laser dentistry. This information can be helpful to know if you’re considering your options. Read on to find out more!

Laser dentistry

This method of dentistry allows dentists and dental professionals to treat patients in a less invasive way than the traditional surgical approach. There are two types of laser dentistry: hard tissue lasers and soft tissue lasers. Both are used every day to better treat someone in need.

Soft tissue lasers

These types of lasers are mostly used for periodontal treatment. They are not as harsh as hard tissue lasers and will not cause as much of an impact on the tissues. When someone has gum disease, the infected areas can be removed with a soft tissue laser. There will not be as much of an impact on the gums, which means less pain and less swelling afterward.

Hard tissue lasers

Laser dentistry that uses hard lasers is aimed more at hard tissues in the mouth, such as around the teeth or within the jawbone. Things like tooth decay or plaque buildup can be removed through the use of a hard tissue laser.

Does a dentist have to have special licensing to perform laser dentistry?

In short, yes. Laser dentistry is still relatively new, which means that there are improvements being made to techniques. However, that is not to say that it does not currently provide great results.

Every dentist undergoes the same training in which they learn to diagnose and treat the teeth and gums. However, some dentists go on to study further dentistry, such as orthodontics or periodontics.

Laser dentistry can actually be used within almost every field of dentistry, which means that all dental specialists have a good reason to get certified and trained in the method. Periodontists can use laser dentistry to rid the gums of disease and infection. Oral surgeons can use laser dentistry to perform surgical procedures such as bone grafting or implant surgery.

Dentists who are trained and certified to use lasers within their practice will likely be able to provide less invasive procedures to patients in need.
